Graduation 2026: Holy Cross Celebrates Achievement, Leadership, and Faith

Holy Cross High School proudly celebrated its 55th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 31, 2026, honoring the achievements of the Class of 2026. During the ceremony, graduates received their diplomas and were recognized with a variety of special awards for academic excellence, leadership, service, and achievement. The memorable event featured inspiring remarks and heartfelt reflections from members of the Board of Directors, school administrators, student speakers, and distinguished guests. As graduates prepared to embark on the next chapter of their journeys, the ceremony served as a meaningful celebration of their accomplishments and the lasting impact of their Holy Cross experience. The graduation ceremony was preceded by a special Graduation Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Board Member, alumni and proud Holy Cross parent, Atty. Gina Petrokaitis ’85 congratulated the graduates and instilled in them the importance of giving back. “Will you become a Board member like me,” she asked the graduating seniors. “Keep in mind what Holy Cross gave you and what you can give back.”

“As Mayor (of the City of Waterbury), I have the opportunity to speak at many different events throughout the year, and each one is meaningful in its own way,” said Mayor Paul Pernerewski ’79, “but returning to Holy Cross where I graduated holds a special place in my heart…Remember, Holy Cross will always be a part of who you are, no matter how far you go. This community and the values you learned here will always be with you. The world you are entering needs people like you. It needs thoughtful leaders, kind neighbors and compassionate citizens.”

President Dr. Thomas C. Pellegrino welcomed the Class of 2026 into the Holy Cross alumni family. He stressed that his interest “doesn’t end with all of you today. I am very interested in understanding from our alumni from what their life experience has been and what part did Holy Cross play in that. Did they, in fact, get a return on their investment.”

“Seniors, when your parents let go of your hand four years ago, they continued to invest in you,” said Tommy Pompei, Principal. “They entrusted me and all of my incredible partners at Holy Cross with the extraordinary responsibility of being the pavements where you walk. To be honest, this class didn’t just walk. They couldn’t wait to jump, run, draw, act, sing, swim, kick, shoot, think, write, share, and create.”

“To the faculty and mentors who have guided me and my peers along the way, thank you,” said Mia Shaker ’26 in her Commencement Address. “You not only taught as academics but also life lessons that go far beyond the classroom. You challenged us, believed in us, and helped shape us into the people we are becoming. Your impact will stay with is, long after we leave Holy Cross.”

Several individuals were honored/recognized during the ceremony including:

Lillian Torrrance ’26 and Gianna Purcaro ’26 received the Valedictorian and Salutatorian Award for maintaining the highest and second-highest grade point average, respectively.
Lillian Torrance ’26 was the recipient of The Sister Margaret Bannon, CND Service Award, presented annually to the senior girl who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school community.
John Petrokaitis ’26 was the recipient of The Holy Cross Fathers’ Club Award, given each year to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most service to the school community.
Daylen Roscoe ’26 was the recipient of The Holy Cross Mothers’ Club Award, presented annually to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most academic improvement from freshman to senior year.
Gianna Palladino ’26 was the recipient of The Monsignor Henry E. Flanagan Award, presented each year to the female student who has improved the most academically from freshman to senior year.

Former NFL All-Pro Patrick Kerney Visits with Holy Cross Football Team

Holy Cross High School recently welcomed former NFL standout Patrick Kerney to speak with the Crusaders varsity football team.

Mr. Kerney enjoyed an accomplished 11-year NFL career as a defensive end with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks after being selected by Atlanta in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft. A two-time All-Pro selection in 2004 and 2007, he finished his professional career with 82.5 sacks, 95 tackles for loss, and 486 total tackles. Kerney once started more than 100 consecutive NFL games at one of football’s most physically demanding positions before a pectoral injury ended the streak.

Before reaching the NFL, Kerney starred at the University of Virginia, where he earned First Team All-American honors. Recruited initially to play lacrosse for the Cavaliers, he became one of the nation’s top defensive football players and served as team captain during his senior season. He was also named one of five finalists for the prestigious Bronko Nagurski Award, presented annually to the nation’s top defensive player.

Since retiring from football, Mr. Kerney has built a successful career in business and financial services. A graduate of The Taft School, the University of Virginia, and Columbia Business School, he previously served as Vice President of NFL Player Benefits, where he helped restructure veterans’ 401(k) plans, educated former players on financial planning and security, and established a financial boot camp program for NFL athletes. He is also the founder of Kerney Insurance in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Mr. Kerney’s visit was especially meaningful as he is a longtime friend and former teammate of Holy Cross Principal Mr. Tommy Pompei. During his presentation, he shared valuable insights on leadership, perseverance, discipline, and preparing for success beyond athletics.

Academic Excellence Celebrated at 2026 Honors Convocation

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, Holy Cross High School proudly hosted its annual Honors Convocation, celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of our students. During the ceremony, students were recognized for their academic excellence through the presentation of honor awards and scholarships, reflecting their hard work, commitment, and achievement throughout the year.

The evening also marked the induction of students into the 2026–2027 National Honor Society, as well as the Spanish Honor Society and Italian Honor Society.

Holy Cross was honored to welcome families and loved ones to share in this memorable celebration. Congratulations to all of our students on their dedication, perseverance, and well-deserved success!

New Board Members Announced for the 2026-2027 School Year

Holy Cross High School is pleased to welcome Erin Benvegnu P ‘25 & ‘26, Anthony Ciriello P ‘27, ‘28, Kelley Laurel ’81, Thomas Pettinicchi, ‘79, and Mark Sparano ‘82 to its Board of Directors for three-year terms, effective July 1, 2026. These five individuals bring a wealth of experience, energy, leadership, and expertise to the school community. Their dedication to excellence in their respective fields mirrors the values and mission of Holy Cross High School, and they are sure to make a significant impact on the school's future.

“Erin, Tony, Kelley, Tom, and Mark bring diverse experiences and expertise to our Board,” said Board Chair, Jack Senich, ‘84. “Their experiences will help inform our path forward, and we are eager to work together to continue building a strong future for Holy Cross High School.”

Erin Benvegnu is a Sales & Business Development Executive with 25+ years of experience transforming global organizations. She brings a wealth of experience in operations, process management, and standardization. She has led large teams supporting clients and partners worldwide while exhibiting a collaborative, solution oriented approach to her work.. A strategic and adaptable communicator, she excels at turning complex challenges into scalable solutions that boost efficiency and empower teams to succeed.Erin is also the proud parent of one Holy Cross graduate and one current student: Julia ‘25 and Mary ‘26.

Anthony Ciriello Jr., .P.E. is a civil and transportation engineering manager with extensive experience leading infrastructure and public works projects locally, as well as across the Northeast and within the US. He has managed highway, municipal, institutional, commercial, and industrial type projects and brings strong expertise in grant writing, project management, and construction oversight. Anthony is an active community volunteer, serving on multiple town committees and other nonprofit boards, where he helps advance public safety, education, and economic development initiatives. As a collaborative partner he is dedicated to enhancing quality of life through advancement of projects that are good for the community. He and Tracey are the proud parents of Luca’ 11 and Marcello, ‘10 - and future Crusader, Gianna.

Kelley Laurel is a technology executive with more than three decades of experience at Fidelity Investments, where she rose from programmer to Senior Vice President of Fidelity Investments. She led large technology organizations supporting brokerage, clearing, and customer experience platforms, overseeing major system implementations and real-time production operations. Known for her focus on innovation and transformation, Kelley has a strong record of delivering value for customers and shareholders. She holds a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from Bentley College and actively supports food insecurity initiatives on Nantucket.

Tom Pettinicchi, Esq. is a founding partner of D’Amico Pettinicchi Injury Lawyers which focuses exclusively on personal injury, representing clients in injury, medical malpractice, and nursing home negligence cases. After more than 25 years in litigation, he remains dedicated to helping injured clients rebuild their lives. Tom is active in multiple legal associations and has lectured, published legal articles, and taught law as an adjunct professor. Committed to community service, he has served on charitable boards and committees, including eight years on the Board of Governors for the Watertown Golf Club, two as its President. He continues to give back through local civic and parish leadership.

Mark P. Sparano, CPA an accomplished financial services executive with decades of leadership in audit, risk, and corporate governance. He serves as a Board Member and Audit Committee Chair at Sentinel Trust Company and previously was Chief Audit Executive at U.S. Bank, where he led a 300-person global audit team and advanced regulatory and risk practices. His career includes senior roles at BNY Mellon, U.S. Trust/Charles Schwab, Bankers Trust, and KPMG. A Bentley University graduate and NYU Executive MBA alum, Mark is a CPA and Chartered Global Management Accountant.

Arts on Oronoke Highlights Student, Faculty, and Alumni Creativity

Holy Cross High School’s annual art show, Arts on Oronoke, celebrated creative works by students, faculty, and alumni. The event offered an opportunity to reconnect members of the Holy Cross artistic community and bring together alumni, faculty, and current students through their shared passion for the arts.

Each year, the exhibition showcases the talent of the Holy Cross family, and for the past two years, monetary prizes have been awarded to recognize outstanding and exceptional artwork. Students received awards for their efforts. Award winners included:

The Office of Catholic Schools recently honored the Superintendent’s Summa Scholars from Catholic high schools across the Archdiocese of Hartford. The ceremony took place on April 30, 2026, at Saint Thomas Chapel at the Pastoral Center of the Archdiocese of Hartford in Bloomfield.

Holy Cross High School, one of seven participating schools, was proud to celebrate seven outstanding students: Erin Barry, Gina Barry, Bella Henao, Reese McGarrity, Gianna Purcaro, Mia Shaker, and Lilly Torrance.

The Superintendent’s Summa Scholar Awards recognize students, parents, and educators who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to academic excellence. Reserved for the top 5% of each graduating class, the honor celebrates students who have maintained outstanding academic performance from freshman year through the first semester of senior year, as reflected in their cumulative grade point averages.

Dr. Thomas C. Pellegrino, President, introduced the Holy Cross honorees along with the teachers selected by each student as a meaningful influence on their academic journey. Honored faculty included Casey Blake, Stephanie Durbin, Erik Lanese, Melissa Torrance, Ryan Mulhern, and Karen Brough.

Holy Cross Student Theater to Present Little Shop of Horrors

The Holy Cross Student Theater will present Little Shop of Horrors with music by Alan Menken and books/lyrics by Howard Ashmen as this year’s spring musical. Performances run on Friday, April 24 at 7:30pm and Saturday, April 25 at 2:30pm and 6:30pm. This production, directed by Sean Lewis, is presented with special permission by Music Theater International. Tickets ($15.00 for adults and $10.00 for senior citizens and students) can be purchased at the door.

Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of shy, struggling florist Seymour Krelborn (Connor Hodgkins ‘28), who works in a failing flower shop and secretly loves his kind but insecure coworker Audrey (Ciara Proulx ‘28). After discovering a mysterious plant during a solar eclipse, which he names Audrey II (JC Hernandez ‘26), Seymour brings unexpected fame and success to the shop. However, he soon learns the plant thrives on human blood, and as it grows, it begins to speak and manipulate him with promises of wealth, success, and Audrey’s love. Driven by desperation and ambition, Seymour is pulled deeper into feeding the plant, even as its demands become more sinister. What begins as a chance for a better life turns into a moral crisis, as Audrey II’s true goal to take over the world becomes clear, Seymour is left to confront the consequences of his choices.

Brianna Mowad ‘27 serves as stage manager. Lighting and Sound will be executed by Isabella Oliver ‘28 and Jayden Lewis ‘28, respectively.

According to Mr. Lewis “It’s a fun show to do. It has been around since the early 80s and is a much loved musical. It has a smaller cast but you can make it as big as you want, and is very entertaining. It is one of those shows where there's no deeper meaning other than to be entertained.”
